Dextromethorphan polistirex
Dextromethorphan polistirex is an over-the-counter drug used primarily as a cough suppressant. It is a long-acting formulation of dextromethorphan, a common ingredient in many cough and cold medications.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Dextromethorphan polistirex is a complex of dextromethorphan and polistirex, a type of ion exchange resin. The complex is designed to slowly release dextromethorphan over time, allowing for a longer duration of action compared to other forms of dextromethorphan.
Medical Uses[edit | edit source]
Dextromethorphan polistirex is used to suppress coughs due to minor throat and bronchial irritation as may occur with the common cold or inhaled irritants. It is also used for temporary relief of sinus congestion and pressure.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of dextromethorphan polistirex include nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness. More serious side effects can occur at high doses, including hallucinations and other psychotic symptoms.
Recreational Use[edit | edit source]
Dextromethorphan polistirex has been used recreationally for its dissociative and hallucinogenic effects. However, this use is dangerous and can lead to serious health problems, including serotonin syndrome and neurotoxicity.
