Dietetic

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Dietetic refers to the science and practice of human nutritional care, particularly as it relates to the regulation of diet in relation to specific diseases or health conditions. The field of dietetics encompasses a range of roles, including clinical dietitians, community dietitians, management dietitians, and consultant dietitians.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Dietetics is a discipline that applies the principles of nutrition to the diet. This includes the study of the nutritional needs of individuals in health and disease, and the planning and management of diets and nutrition services in health care and community settings.

Roles in Dietetics[edit | edit source]

Clinical Dietitians[edit | edit source]

Clinical dietitians work in hospitals and other health care facilities to provide nutrition therapy to patients with a variety of health conditions, and provide dietary consultations to patients and their families. They often work with other health care professionals, and plan nutritional programs to prevent disease and to maintain health.

Community Dietitians[edit | edit source]

Community dietitians work in public health agencies, health maintenance organizations, and home health agencies. They counsel individuals and groups on nutritional practices designed to prevent disease and promote health.

Management Dietitians[edit | edit source]

Management dietitians plan food service systems for institutions such as hospitals and schools, promote healthy eating habits, and manage personnel.

Consultant Dietitians[edit | edit source]

Consultant dietitians work under contract with health care facilities or in their own private practice. They perform nutrition screenings for their clients and offer advice on diet-related concerns such as weight loss and cholesterol reduction.

Education and Training[edit | edit source]

In order to become a dietitian, one must earn a bachelor's degree in dietetics, food and nutrition, food service systems management, or a related area. Dietitians also need to complete an internship and pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
