Dimitrie Anghel
Dimitrie Anghel (July 16, 1872 – November 13, 1914) was a Romanian poet, prose writer, and translator. He was a prominent figure in the Romanian literary scene during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for his contributions to Symbolism and his influence on Romanian literature.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Dimitrie Anghel was born in Cornu, a village in Prahova County. He attended primary school in his native village and later moved to Bucharest for his secondary education. Anghel showed an early interest in literature and began writing poetry during his school years.
Literary Career[edit | edit source]
Anghel's literary debut came in 1890 when he published his first poems in the magazine Literatorul. He quickly gained recognition for his unique style and became associated with the Symbolist movement. His poetry often explored themes of nature, love, and melancholy, characterized by rich imagery and musicality.
In addition to his poetry, Anghel was also a prolific prose writer. He published several collections of short stories and essays, which were well-received by critics and readers alike. His works include "Fantazii" (1909) and "Oglinda fermecată" (1910).

Dimitrie Anghel was also an accomplished translator. He translated works from several languages into Romanian, including French, English, and Italian. His translations helped introduce Romanian readers to the works of prominent international authors and contributed to the cultural exchange between Romania and other countries.
Personal Life and Death[edit | edit source]
Anghel's personal life was marked by periods of intense emotional turmoil. He struggled with depression and had a tumultuous relationship with his wife, Natalia Negru. On November 13, 1914, Dimitrie Anghel died by suicide in Iași.

Despite his relatively short life, Dimitrie Anghel left a lasting impact on Romanian literature. His contributions to the Symbolist movement and his innovative use of language continue to be studied and appreciated by literary scholars and enthusiasts.
