Disjointed is a American sitcom that premiered on Netflix on August 25, 2017. Created by Chuck Lorre and David Javerbaum, the show explores the life and times of Ruth Whitefeather Feldman, a lifelong advocate for marijuana legalization who finally lives her dream as the owner of a Los Angeles cannabis dispensary. The series stars Kathy Bates as Ruth and co-stars a diverse ensemble of characters who work at the dispensary with her. Despite its unique premise and social commentary, Disjointed received mixed reviews from critics and was canceled after one season, consisting of 20 episodes split into two parts.

Plot[edit | edit source]

Disjointed follows Ruth Whitefeather Feldman (played by Kathy Bates), a woman in her seventies who has been an advocate for the legalization of marijuana for decades. After legalization passes, she becomes the owner of a cannabis dispensary called Ruth's Alternative Caring. The show delves into the daily operations of the dispensary, the lives of its employees, and the various customers who come through its doors. It combines humor with moments of drama, addressing the societal and personal issues related to cannabis use and the industry itself.

  • Kathy Bates as Ruth Whitefeather Feldman, the dispensary owner
  • Aaron Moten as Travis Feldman, Ruth's son and the dispensary's business manager
  • Elizabeth Alderfer as Olivia, a budtender who dreams of starting her own marijuana edibles business
  • Tone Bell as Carter, a security guard at the dispensary with PTSD

  • Dougie Baldwin as Pete, the dispensary's grower who talks to his plants
  • Chris Redd as Dank, a customer and marijuana enthusiast
  • Betsy Sodaro as Dabby, Dank's partner and fellow enthusiast

Reception[edit | edit source]

Upon its release, Disjointed received a polarized reception from both critics and audiences. Some praised the show for its bold humor, Kathy Bates' performance, and its attempt to tackle various issues surrounding cannabis culture. However, others criticized it for relying on stereotypes, its inconsistent tone, and perceived lack of depth in addressing the complexities of marijuana legalization and use. Despite the divided opinions, Disjointed has been acknowledged for bringing cannabis-related conversations into mainstream media.

Cancellation[edit | edit source]

Netflix announced the cancellation of Disjointed in February 2018, after the release of its first season. The decision was attributed to a combination of factors, including mixed critical reception and possibly the evolving landscape of cannabis legality and culture in the United States, which may have affected viewer interest and the show's relevance.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Although Disjointed had a short run, it remains a notable attempt to blend comedy with the increasingly relevant topic of cannabis legalization and its impact on society. The show contributed to the ongoing dialogue about marijuana, its users, and the legal and cultural shifts surrounding it. Disjointed also highlighted the potential for more diverse narratives within the sitcom genre, especially those involving older, female protagonists and contemporary issues.
