It is renowned for its sophisticated architecture and the intricate beauty of its Islamic decorations. The complex was commissioned by Ahmet Şah and his wife Turan Melek Sultan, members of the Mengujekid dynasty, and was completed in 1228-29. It is a unique example of the integration of a mosque and a hospital (darüşşifa) within a single complex, reflecting the holistic approach to physical and spiritual healing in the Islamic world.

The mosque section of the complex features a prayer hall with a central dome, flanked by two minarets. The hospital is located to the east of the mosque and was designed to operate independently. The entire complex showcases a remarkable use of cut stone and includes a variety of decorative elements, such as muqarnas, calligraphy, and geometric patterns, which are considered masterpieces of Islamic art.
The entrance to the mosque is through a highly ornate portal, known as the Crown Door, which is adorned with intricate carvings and motifs. This door is a highlight of the complex and exemplifies the skill of the craftsmen of the time.
