Dobbin House Tavern
Dobbin House Tavern is a historic building located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Built in 1776 by the Reverend Alexander Dobbin, it is one of the oldest structures in the area and has served various purposes throughout its history, including as a residence, school, and tavern. Today, it operates as a restaurant and museum, offering visitors a glimpse into 18th-century life.
History[edit | edit source]
The Dobbin House was constructed by Alexander Dobbin, an Irish immigrant and Presbyterian minister. Dobbin used the house as both a family residence and a classical school, where he educated young men in preparation for college. The building's architecture reflects the colonial style of the period, with its stone construction and large, open hearths.
During the American Civil War, the Dobbin House played a significant role. It is believed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad, providing shelter to escaping slaves. Additionally, during the Battle of Gettysburg, the house served as a field hospital for wounded soldiers.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
The Dobbin House is an excellent example of colonial architecture. The structure is primarily made of stone, with thick walls and large fireplaces that were typical of the period. The interior features original woodwork, including wide plank floors and exposed beams. The house has been carefully preserved and restored to maintain its historical integrity.
Present Day[edit | edit source]
Today, the Dobbin House Tavern operates as a restaurant and museum. The restaurant offers a menu that includes traditional American fare, with some dishes inspired by 18th-century recipes. The museum portion of the building provides historical exhibits and guided tours, allowing visitors to learn about the house's history and its role in the community.
