History[edit | edit source]

The area around Dobrich has been inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological findings suggest that the region was settled by the Thracians and later by the Romans. During the Middle Ages, the area was part of the First Bulgarian Empire and later the Second Bulgarian Empire. The city itself was founded during the Ottoman rule in the 16th century and was originally known as Hacıoğlu Pazarcık.

In 1878, following the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), Dobrich became part of the newly liberated Principality of Bulgaria. The city was renamed Dobrich in honor of the medieval Bulgarian ruler Dobrotitsa, who ruled the region in the 14th century. During the Second Balkan War and World War I, Dobrich changed hands several times between Bulgaria and Romania. It was finally returned to Bulgaria in 1940 under the Treaty of Craiova.
