Doctor Fate is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character first appeared in More Fun Comics #55, created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Howard Sherman. Doctor Fate is a powerful sorcerer and a founding member of the Justice Society of America. Over the years, several characters have taken on the mantle of Doctor Fate, with the most notable being Kent Nelson.

The character of Doctor Fate was introduced during the Golden Age of Comic Books. The original Doctor Fate, Kent Nelson, was an archaeologist who discovered the tomb of the ancient wizard Nabu in the Valley of Ur. Upon awakening Nabu, Kent was trained in the arts of magic and given the Helmet of Fate, which grants him immense magical powers.
