Doederleinia berycoides
Doederleinia berycoides is a species of fish in the family Acropomatidae, commonly known as the Blackthroat seaperch. It is the only member of its genus, Doederleinia.
Taxonomy[edit | edit source]
The Blackthroat seaperch was first described by Albert Günther in 1887. It is classified under the family Acropomatidae, also known as the lanternbellies or temperate ocean-basses. The genus name, Doederleinia, is in honor of Ludwig Heinrich Philipp Döderlein, a German zoologist who worked extensively in Japan.
Description[edit | edit source]
The Blackthroat seaperch is a medium-sized fish, typically reaching lengths of 30-40 cm. It is characterized by its dark throat, from which it gets its common name. The body is generally silver in color, with a slightly darker back. The fins are usually pale to dark gray.
Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]
Doederleinia berycoides is found in the Pacific Ocean, specifically in the western region. Its range extends from southern Japan to the northern coast of Australia. It inhabits deep waters, usually between 100 and 400 meters, and is often found near the ocean floor.
Diet[edit | edit source]
The diet of the Blackthroat seaperch primarily consists of small benthic organisms, including crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates. It is also known to feed on smaller fish.
Reproduction[edit | edit source]
Little is known about the reproductive habits of Doederleinia berycoides. However, like many other species in the Acropomatidae family, it is believed to be an oviparous species, with females releasing eggs that are then fertilized externally.
Conservation status[edit | edit source]
The Blackthroat seaperch is not currently considered to be at risk of extinction. However, its deep-water habitat makes it difficult to study, and there may be threats that are not yet fully understood.
