Donna Christensen
Donna Marie Christensen (born September 19, 1945) is an American physician and politician. She served as the non-voting Delegate from the United States Virgin Islands to the United States House of Representatives from 1997 to 2015. Christensen was the first female physician to serve as a member in the history of the United States Congress.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Christensen was born in Teaneck, New Jersey. She attended St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, and later earned her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences in Washington, D.C..
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Before entering politics, Christensen worked as a family physician. She served as the medical director for the St. Croix Hospital and held various other medical positions in the United States Virgin Islands.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Christensen was elected as the Delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the United States Virgin Islands in 1996 and served until 2015. As a Delegate, she was a member of the Democratic Party and participated in the Congressional Black Caucus.
Legislative Work[edit | edit source]
During her tenure, Christensen focused on issues such as healthcare, economic development, and environmental protection. She was a strong advocate for the improvement of healthcare services in the United States Virgin Islands and worked on legislation to address disparities in healthcare access.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Christensen is married and has two children. She continues to be active in community service and healthcare advocacy.
