Donna Christensen
American politician and physician
Donna Marie Christian-Christensen (born September 19, 1945) is an American physician and politician. She served as the non-voting delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the United States Virgin Islands from 1997 to 2015. Christensen was the first female physician to serve as a member in the history of the U.S. Congress.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Donna Christian-Christensen was born in Teaneck, New Jersey, and raised in the United States Virgin Islands. She attended St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She then pursued her medical degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences, graduating in 1970.
Medical career[edit | edit source]
After completing her medical education, Christensen returned to the Virgin Islands, where she practiced medicine. She worked in various capacities, including as a family physician and in public health roles. Her medical career provided her with a deep understanding of the healthcare challenges faced by her community, which later influenced her political career.
Political career[edit | edit source]
Christensen entered politics as a member of the Democratic Party. In 1996, she was elected as the delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Virgin Islands, succeeding Victor O. Frazer. She was re-elected to eight additional terms, serving until 2015.
Legislative work[edit | edit source]
During her tenure in Congress, Christensen was a strong advocate for healthcare reform, environmental protection, and economic development in the Virgin Islands. She served on several committees, including the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, where she focused on health issues, and the House Committee on Natural Resources, where she worked on matters related to insular areas.
Caucus memberships[edit | edit source]
Christensen was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Progressive Caucus. She was also involved in the Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues, advocating for policies that support women's health and rights.
Post-congressional career[edit | edit source]
After leaving Congress, Christensen continued to be active in public service and healthcare advocacy. She has worked with various organizations to improve healthcare access and quality in underserved communities.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Christensen is married and has two children. She is known for her commitment to her community and her efforts to improve the lives of Virgin Islanders through both her medical and political work.
