Drambuie

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Drambuie is a sweet, golden colored 40% ABV liqueur made from scotch whisky, honey, herbs and spices. The brand had been owned by the MacKinnon family for a hundred years but was bought by William Grant & Sons in 2014. It is produced in Broxburn, Scotland.

History[edit | edit source]

Drambuie originated in Scotland. The name Drambuie comes from the Scottish Gaelic phrase "an dram buidheach", which means "the drink that satisfies". The recipe was allegedly given by Prince Charles Edward Stuart to Captain John MacKinnon as a reward for his help during the 1745 Jacobite uprising.

Production[edit | edit source]

Drambuie is a liqueur that combines aged Scotch whisky, spices, and heather honey. Its exact recipe is a closely guarded secret, only known by a few in the company. The process involves blending the ingredients and then leaving them to marry for a period of time before bottling.

Taste[edit | edit source]

The taste of Drambuie is a complex arrangement of sweet and spicy flavors. Its unique taste and rich heritage is what sets it apart from other liqueurs. It can be drunk neat, on the rocks, or used as a mixer in cocktails such as the Rusty Nail.
