Dog (domestic dog)

The Drever is a breed of dog originating from Sweden. It is a type of hound used primarily for hunting deer and other small game. The Drever is known for its excellent tracking ability, endurance, and versatility in various terrains.

History[edit | edit source]

The Drever was developed in the early 20th century by crossing the Westphalian Dachsbracke with various Swedish hounds. The breed was officially recognized by the Swedish Kennel Club in 1947. The name "Drever" was derived from the Swedish word "drev," meaning "to drive," reflecting the breed's primary function in driving game towards hunters.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

The Drever is a small to medium-sized dog with a long body and short legs, similar in appearance to the Dachshund. It has a short, dense, and harsh coat that comes in various colors, including tricolor, red and white, and black and tan. The breed's ears are medium-sized and hang close to the head, and its tail is typically carried low.

Temperament[edit | edit source]

Drevers are known for their friendly and even-tempered nature. They are intelligent, alert, and have a strong hunting instinct. While they are primarily used as hunting dogs, Drevers can also make good family pets due to their loyal and affectionate disposition.

Hunting and Working Abilities[edit | edit source]

The Drever is highly valued for its hunting skills, particularly in tracking and driving game such as roe deer, foxes, and hares. The breed's endurance and ability to work in various terrains make it a versatile hunting companion. Drevers are known for their loud and distinctive bark, which helps hunters locate them during hunts.

Health[edit | edit source]

Drevers are generally healthy dogs with a lifespan of around 12-14 years. However, like all breeds, they can be prone to certain health issues, including hip dysplasia and intervertebral disc disease. Regular veterinary check-ups and a healthy diet can help maintain their overall well-being.
