Dushanbe
Dushanbe is the capital city and the largest city of Tajikistan, located in the Hissar Valley in the south of the country. It is the political, cultural, economic, and scientific center of Tajikistan. The city was known as Stalinabad from 1929 to 1961. As of the latest update, Dushanbe is home to a population that reflects a diverse blend of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, with Tajiks comprising the majority.

The area of present-day Dushanbe was originally a small village that began to grow in the early 20th century after the Russian Empire built a railway to the region. The name "Dushanbe" means "Monday" in Tajik, derived from the market that was held in the village every Monday. The city was renamed Stalinabad in 1929, in honor of Joseph Stalin, but reverted to its original name, Dushanbe, in 1961, following de-Stalinization.
