Edward K. Barsky
Edward K. Barsky (1895–1975) was an American physician and political activist known for his work in the Spanish Civil War and his involvement with the American Medical Bureau. He was a prominent figure in the medical and political landscape of the early to mid-20th century.

Edward K. Barsky was born in 1895. He pursued a career in medicine, graduating from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.
Spanish Civil War[edit | edit source]
During the Spanish Civil War, Barsky played a significant role as the head of the American Medical Bureau to Aid Spanish Democracy. This organization was instrumental in providing medical assistance to the Republican forces fighting against the Nationalist forces led by Francisco Franco.
American Medical Bureau[edit | edit source]
The American Medical Bureau was established to support the medical needs of the Republican forces in Spain. Under Barsky's leadership, the bureau sent numerous medical professionals and supplies to Spain, significantly aiding the Republican cause.
Political Activism and Legal Issues[edit | edit source]
Barsky was also known for his political activism. He was a member of the American Communist Party and was involved in various leftist causes. His political activities led to legal troubles, including a conviction for contempt of Congress in 1947 when he refused to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC).
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
After his legal battles, Barsky continued to be active in medical and political circles. He remained a controversial figure due to his political beliefs and activities. Barsky passed away in 1975, leaving behind a legacy of medical humanitarianism and political activism.
