Egegik is a city in Lake and Peninsula Borough, Alaska, United States. It is located on the eastern shores of both Bristol Bay and the Bering Sea. The city is known for its rich history, diverse wildlife, and abundant natural resources, particularly salmon.

History[edit | edit source]

The area now known as Egegik was originally inhabited by the Yup'ik, a group of indigenous people in Alaska. The name "Egegik" is derived from the Yup'ik word "Igyagiiq", which means "on the contrary" or "returning". The area was first recorded by non-native explorers in the late 19th century.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Egegik is located at 58°13′0″N 157°21′44″W. The city has a total area of 134.0 square miles, of which, 32.8 square miles of it is land and 101.2 square miles of it is water. The city is located on the eastern shore of Bristol Bay at the mouth of the Egegik River.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Egegik is largely based on commercial fishing, particularly salmon fishing. The city is home to several processing plants and canneries, which provide employment for many residents during the fishing season. Other industries in the city include subsistence hunting and tourism.

Health[edit | edit source]

Egegik is served by the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation, which provides comprehensive health care services to the residents of the city. The nearest hospital is in Dillingham, which is approximately 95 miles away.

Education[edit | edit source]

Education in Egegik is provided by the Lake and Peninsula School District. The city has one school, Egegik School, which serves students from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
