Egri Bikavér
Egri Bikavér (also known as Bull's Blood of Eger) is a famous Hungarian wine blend produced in the Eger wine region of Hungary. It is one of the most well-known Hungarian wines internationally and has a rich history dating back several centuries.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of Egri Bikavér can be traced back to the 16th century during the Ottoman occupation of Hungary. According to legend, the name "Bull's Blood" was coined during the Siege of Eger in 1552 when the Hungarian defenders drank the red wine to boost their courage. The Turks, seeing the red-stained beards of the soldiers, believed they had been drinking the blood of bulls, which contributed to their fierce resistance.
Production[edit | edit source]
Egri Bikavér is a blend of several grape varieties, with the primary grapes being Kékfrankos (also known as Blaufränkisch), Kadarka, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other grape varieties that may be included are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Zweigelt, and Syrah. The exact blend can vary, but the wine is typically aged in oak barrels, which imparts additional complexity and depth to its flavor profile.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Egri Bikavér is known for its deep ruby color, rich aroma, and full-bodied taste. The wine often exhibits flavors of dark fruits such as blackberries and plums, along with spicy and earthy notes. The tannins are usually well-structured, providing a balanced and smooth finish.
Regulations[edit | edit source]
The production of Egri Bikavér is strictly regulated to maintain its quality and reputation. The wine must be produced in the Eger wine region and adhere to specific blending and aging requirements. The designation "Egri Bikavér" is protected under Hungarian wine law and the European Union's Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) system.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]
Egri Bikavér holds a special place in Hungarian culture and is often associated with national pride and historical resilience. It is a popular choice for celebrations and is frequently featured in Hungarian literature and folklore.
