Elaine Paige (born 5 March 1948) is an English singer, actress, and broadcaster, best known for her work in musical theatre. She has been called the "First Lady of British Musical Theatre" due to her significant contributions to the genre.

Elaine Paige was born Elaine Jill Bickerstaff in Barnet, Hertfordshire, England. She attended the Aida Foster Theatre School in London, where she trained in acting and singing.

Theatre[edit | edit source]
Paige's breakthrough role came in 1978 when she was cast as Eva Perón in the original London production of the musical Evita. Her performance earned her critical acclaim and established her as a leading lady in West End musicals.
She went on to originate the role of Grizabella in the musical Cats in 1981, where she performed the song "Memory", which became one of her signature songs. Paige also starred in the original production of Chess in 1986, playing the role of Florence.
Other notable roles include Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, Edith Piaf in Piaf, and Anna Leonowens in The King and I.

In addition to her theatre work, Paige has released numerous studio albums, compilation albums, and live recordings. Her albums often feature a mix of musical theatre songs and contemporary pop music.
Broadcasting[edit | edit source]
Since 2004, Paige has hosted a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 2 called Elaine Paige on Sunday, where she plays music from musicals and film soundtracks.

Paige has been involved in various charity efforts, including work with The Prince's Trust and Breast Cancer Campaign.
