Elizabeth Victoria Montgomery (April 15, 1933 – May 18, 1995) was an American actress whose career spanned five decades in film, television, and theater. She is best known for her role as Samantha Stephens on the television series Bewitched.

Early life

Elizabeth Montgomery was born in Los Angeles, California, to actor Robert Montgomery and Broadway actress Elizabeth Bryan Allen. She had a brother, Robert Jr., and a sister, Martha Bryan Montgomery, who died as an infant. Montgomery attended the Westlake School for Girls and later studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.

Career

Montgomery made her television debut in her father's series Robert Montgomery Presents in 1951. She went on to appear in numerous television shows, including The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Untouchables.

Bewitched

Montgomery's most famous role was that of Samantha Stephens, a witch married to a mortal, in the television series Bewitched. The show aired from 1964 to 1972 and became a cultural phenomenon. Her portrayal of Samantha earned her five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe Award nominations.

Later career

After Bewitched, Montgomery continued to work in television, starring in a variety of roles in movies and series. Notable works include A Case of Rape (1974), The Legend of Lizzie Borden (1975), and Amos (1985). She also made guest appearances on shows such as The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.

Personal life

Montgomery was married four times. Her first marriage was to Frederic Gallatin Cammann in 1954, which ended in divorce in 1955. She then married actor Gig Young in 1956, but they divorced in 1963. Her third marriage was to director William Asher in 1963, with whom she had three children: William, Robert, and Rebecca. They divorced in 1973. Her final marriage was to actor Robert Foxworth in 1993, and they remained together until her death.

Death

Elizabeth Montgomery died of colorectal cancer on May 18, 1995, at her home in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 62.

Legacy

Montgomery's work on Bewitched has left a lasting legacy, and she is remembered as one of television's most beloved actresses. Her contributions to television were recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
