The Emblem of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic was the official state emblem of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic (Georgian SSR), a constituent republic of the Soviet Union. The emblem was adopted in 1921 and was used until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1990.

Design[edit | edit source]

The emblem of the Georgian SSR was heavily influenced by the emblem of the Soviet Union. It featured a combination of communist symbols, including the hammer and sickle, which represented the unity of the working class and the peasantry. The emblem also included a rising sun, symbolizing the future of the Soviet state, and a red star, representing the rule of the Communist Party.

The emblem was framed by a wreath of wheat ears, which symbolized the agricultural richness of the Georgian SSR. A red banner with the motto "Workers of the world, unite!" in both Georgian and Russian was also included. The name of the republic was inscribed in Georgian and Russian at the top of the emblem.

Historical Context[edit | edit source]

The Georgian SSR was established in 1921 following the Red Army invasion of Georgia. The emblem was designed to reflect the ideals and symbols of the Soviet state, while also incorporating elements specific to Georgia. The use of Georgian script and the inclusion of local agricultural symbols were intended to acknowledge the unique identity of the Georgian people within the Soviet Union.

Changes and Evolution[edit | edit source]

Over the years, the emblem underwent several modifications. The most significant change occurred in 1937 when the design was updated to include the new Soviet symbols and the revised motto. The final version of the emblem remained in use until the Georgian SSR declared its independence from the Soviet Union in 1990.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the emblem of the Georgian SSR was replaced by the Coat of arms of Georgia. The new coat of arms retained some elements of the Soviet emblem but was redesigned to reflect the independent and sovereign status of Georgia.
