The Emblem of the Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was the official emblem of the Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Kalmyk ASSR), a constituent republic of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union. The emblem was adopted in 1937 and was used until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1992.
Design[edit | edit source]
The emblem of the Kalmyk ASSR was based on the State Emblem of the Soviet Union, which featured a hammer and sickle over a globe, surrounded by a wreath of wheat, with the rising sun and a red star at the top. The emblem of the Kalmyk ASSR included additional elements that represented the unique identity and culture of the Kalmyk people.
The central element of the emblem was the hammer and sickle, symbolizing the unity of the workers and peasants. This was set against a backdrop of a globe, representing the international nature of the Soviet socialist state. Surrounding the globe was a wreath of wheat, symbolizing agriculture and the abundance provided by the collective efforts of the people.
Above the globe was a red star, representing the Communist Party and its guiding role in the state. Below the globe, a ribbon displayed the motto "Workers of the world, unite!" in both Russian and Kalmyk. The ribbon also featured the name of the republic in both languages.
Historical Context[edit | edit source]
The Kalmyk ASSR was established in 1935 as an autonomous republic within the RSFSR. The adoption of the emblem in 1937 was part of a broader effort to create distinct symbols for each of the Soviet republics, reflecting their unique cultural and national identities while maintaining the common elements of Soviet symbolism.
The emblem remained in use until the early 1990s, when the Soviet Union dissolved, and the Kalmyk ASSR was transformed into the Republic of Kalmykia, a federal subject of the Russian Federation.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The emblem of the Kalmyk ASSR is a historical symbol that reflects the era of Soviet rule and the specific identity of the Kalmyk people within the Soviet Union. It is part of the broader history of Soviet heraldry and the use of symbols to represent the unity and diversity of the Soviet republics.
