The Emblem of the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was the official emblem of the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Karelian ASSR), a constituent republic of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union. The emblem was adopted in 1937 and was used until 1956, when the Karelian ASSR was transformed into the Karelian-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic.

Design[edit | edit source]

The emblem of the Karelian ASSR was heavily influenced by the State Emblem of the Soviet Union. It featured the traditional Soviet symbols of the hammer and sickle, representing the unity of the workers and peasants, and the red star, symbolizing the victory of communism and the global socialist community.

The emblem also included elements specific to the Karelian ASSR, such as the depiction of the natural landscape of Karelia, including forests and rivers, which highlighted the region's natural resources and beauty. The emblem was encircled by a wreath of wheat and other crops, symbolizing the agricultural richness of the republic.

Motto[edit | edit source]

The emblem bore the Soviet motto "Пролетарии всех стран, соединяйтесь!" ("Proletarians of all countries, unite!") in both Russian and Karelian. This motto was a common feature of Soviet emblems, reflecting the internationalist ideology of the Soviet state.

Historical Context[edit | edit source]

The Karelian ASSR was established in 1923 as an autonomous republic within the RSFSR. In 1940, it was elevated to the status of a full Soviet Socialist Republic, becoming the Karelian-Finnish SSR. However, in 1956, it was downgraded back to an autonomous republic within the RSFSR, and the emblem of the Karelian ASSR was reinstated until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
