Encephalopathy intracerebral calcification retinal

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Encephalopathy Intracerebral Calcification Retinal (EICR) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by the presence of calcification in the brain, encephalopathy, and abnormalities in the retina. This condition is part of a group of disorders known as neurodegenerative diseases, which involve the progressive loss of structure or function of neurons, including death of neurons.

Symptoms and Signs[edit | edit source]

The symptoms of EICR can vary significantly among affected individuals but commonly include neurological and visual impairments. Neurological symptoms may include intellectual disability, seizures, muscle spasticity, and ataxia (lack of muscle coordination). Visual symptoms are primarily due to retinal abnormalities and may include decreased vision and potentially progressive loss of sight.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of EICR remains largely unknown. It is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Some cases have been observed to run in families, suggesting a possible genetic predisposition. However, no specific genes have been conclusively linked to the condition as of the current understanding.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of EICR involves a combination of clinical evaluation, imaging studies, and sometimes genetic testing. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans are crucial for detecting intracerebral calcifications. Detailed eye examinations are necessary to identify and assess retinal abnormalities.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

There is no cure for EICR, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life. This may include anticonvulsant medications for seizures, physical therapy to improve mobility and muscle strength, and special education programs for those with intellectual disabilities. Regular follow-up with a neurologist and an ophthalmologist is essential for monitoring the progression of the disease and adjusting treatment as necessary.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for individuals with EICR varies depending on the severity of symptoms and the onset of the disease. Early intervention and supportive care can improve some symptoms and overall quality of life, but the progressive nature of the disease may lead to significant disabilities over time.
