Epimedium
Epimedium is a genus of plants in the family Berberidaceae, commonly known as horny goat weed or bishop's hat. The genus contains about 52 species, native to Asia and the Mediterranean region. Epimedium species are used as ornamental plants and are known for their aphrodisiac properties.
Description[edit | edit source]
Epimedium plants are deciduous or evergreen perennials. They have four-petaled flowers that bloom in spring. The flowers are notable for their inner sepals which are larger than the petals. The leaves are compound and typically have three leaflets, but can have up to 15 leaflets in some species.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Epimedium is used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is known as yin yang huo. It is believed to have aphrodisiac properties and is used to treat various sexual dysfunctions. Some species are also used to treat cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Epimedium prefers shady conditions and well-drained soil. It is a popular plant for woodland gardens and shady borders. Some species are more tolerant of sun and dry conditions than others.
