ErbB1

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

ErbB1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the EGFR gene. It is a member of the ErbB family of receptors, a subfamily of four closely related receptor tyrosine kinases: EGFR (ErbB1), HER2/neu (ErbB2), Her 3 (ErbB3) and Her 4 (ErbB4). Mutations affecting EGFR expression or activity could result in cancer.

Function[edit | edit source]

EGFR is a cell surface protein that binds to epidermal growth factor. Binding of the protein to a ligand induces receptor dimerization and tyrosine autophosphorylation and leads to cell proliferation. Mutations in this gene are associated with lung cancer.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

EGFR is a gene that codes for a protein called epidermal growth factor receptor. EGFR is found on the surface of some cells where it plays a role in the communication of cells and the growth of new cells. An excess of this protein has been associated with cancer growth.
