Ertharin Cousin (born May 12, 1957) is an American diplomat and former Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP). She served in this role from April 2012 until April 2017. Cousin has been recognized for her leadership in addressing global hunger and food insecurity.

Ertharin Cousin was born in Chicago, Illinois. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and later obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School of Law.

Cousin began her career in the private sector, working in retail food and beverage companies. She later transitioned to public service, holding various positions in the United States government.

Government Service[edit | edit source]

Cousin served as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome from 2009 to 2012. In this role, she was responsible for representing the United States at the Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the World Food Programme.

World Food Programme[edit | edit source]

In April 2012, Cousin was appointed as the Executive Director of the World Food Programme, succeeding Josette Sheeran. During her tenure, she focused on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the WFP's operations, particularly in crisis situations. She also emphasized the importance of partnerships with other organizations and the private sector to combat global hunger.

After leaving the WFP in 2017, Cousin has continued to be active in global food security and humanitarian efforts. She has served on various boards and advisory committees, contributing her expertise to initiatives aimed at ending hunger and improving nutrition worldwide.
