Ethacridine lactate

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Ethacridine lactate is a chemical compound used in the field of medicine and pharmacology. It is also known by its trade name, Rivanol. Ethacridine lactate is an aromatic organic compound that is primarily used as an antiseptic and abortifacient.

Chemical Structure[edit | edit source]

Ethacridine lactate is a derivative of acridine, a nitrogen-containing, tricyclic compound. The chemical formula of ethacridine lactate is C21H20N2O2. It is a yellow, crystalline powder that is soluble in water and alcohol.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

In medicine, ethacridine lactate is used as a topical antiseptic for minor cuts and abrasions. It is also used in the form of a solution for the irrigation of wounds. In addition to its antiseptic properties, ethacridine lactate is used as an abortifacient in the second trimester of pregnancy. It works by inducing uterine contractions and promoting the expulsion of the fetus.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

The pharmacological action of ethacridine lactate is based on its ability to bind to DNA and RNA, thereby inhibiting the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins. This leads to the death of microorganisms and makes ethacridine lactate an effective antiseptic.

Safety and Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all medications, ethacridine lactate can cause side effects. These may include skin irritation when used topically and uterine cramping when used as an abortifacient. Ethacridine lactate should be used with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
