Eugene Christopher Monroe (born April 18, 1987) is a former American football offensive tackle. He played college football at the University of Virginia and was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars eighth overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. Monroe also played for the Baltimore Ravens.
Early life[edit | edit source]
Monroe was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. He attended Plainfield High School, where he was a standout player on the school's football team. Monroe was recognized as a USA Today High School All-American in 2004.
College career[edit | edit source]
Monroe played college football at the University of Virginia for the Cavaliers. During his time at Virginia, he was known for his strong performance on the offensive line and was named to the First-team All-ACC in 2008.
Professional career[edit | edit source]
Jacksonville Jaguars[edit | edit source]
Monroe was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the eighth overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. He quickly became a key player on the Jaguars' offensive line, starting in most of the games during his tenure with the team.
Baltimore Ravens[edit | edit source]
In 2013, Monroe was traded to the Baltimore Ravens. He continued to perform at a high level, contributing significantly to the team's offensive line. Monroe played with the Ravens until his release in 2016.
Advocacy and Retirement[edit | edit source]
After retiring from professional football, Monroe became an advocate for the use of medical cannabis in the treatment of chronic pain and other conditions. He has been vocal about the benefits of cannabis for athletes and has worked to change the NFL's policies regarding its use.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Monroe resides with his family and continues to be involved in various advocacy efforts related to health and wellness.
