European Computer Driving Licence
European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL), also known as the International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) outside Europe, is a certification program designed to validate an individual's computer skills. The ECDL is recognized globally and is administered by the ECDL Foundation, a not-for-profit organization.
History[edit | edit source]
The ECDL was first introduced in Sweden in 1996. It was developed to address the growing need for computer literacy in the workforce. Since its inception, the ECDL has expanded to over 100 countries and is available in more than 40 languages.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The ECDL certification is modular, meaning that candidates can choose from a variety of modules to tailor their certification to their specific needs. The modules are divided into three categories:
- Base Modules: These cover essential computer skills and include:
* Computer Essentials * Online Essentials * Word Processing * Spreadsheets
- Intermediate Modules: These provide more advanced skills and include:
* Presentation * Using Databases * IT Security
- Advanced Modules: These are for specialized skills and include:
* Advanced Word Processing * Advanced Spreadsheets * Advanced Database * Advanced Presentation
Certification Process[edit | edit source]
To obtain the ECDL certification, candidates must pass a series of tests. Each module has its own test, and candidates can take these tests at accredited ECDL Test Centres. The tests are designed to assess practical skills and knowledge in using various computer applications.
Benefits[edit | edit source]
The ECDL certification is widely recognized by employers, educational institutions, and government bodies. It provides a benchmark for computer literacy and can enhance career prospects, improve job performance, and increase confidence in using technology.
