European Union of Medical Specialists[edit | edit source]

The European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), established in 1958, is a non-governmental organisation representing medical specialists at the European level. Its main objective is to advocate for the highest standards of healthcare and medical training in Europe.

History[edit | edit source]

The UEMS was founded in 1958, following the creation of the European Economic Community. Its initial aim was to provide a platform for the free movement of medical specialists within the European Community, and to ensure the highest possible standards of training and healthcare.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The UEMS is composed of National Medical Associations from the European Union member states, the European Economic Area countries, and Switzerland. It is governed by a Council, which is composed of two delegates from each member country. The Council is responsible for setting the UEMS's policy and strategic direction.

Activities[edit | edit source]

The UEMS works to promote the highest standards of medical training and healthcare in Europe. It does this through a variety of activities, including:

  • Developing standards for medical training and continuing professional development
  • Advocating for the recognition of medical specialties at the European level
  • Promoting the free movement of medical specialists within Europe
  • Collaborating with other international medical organisations

Impact[edit | edit source]

The UEMS has had a significant impact on the standardisation of medical training and healthcare in Europe. Its work has led to the recognition of many medical specialties at the European level, and has helped to facilitate the free movement of medical specialists within Europe.
