Excedrin (brand)
Excedrin is a brand of over-the-counter analgesic medication that is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. It is primarily used for the treatment of minor aches and pains, including headache, migraine, muscle ache, arthritis, toothache, and menstrual pain.
Composition[edit | edit source]
Excedrin contains three active ingredients: acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), paracetamol (acetaminophen), and caffeine. The combination of these ingredients provides a multi-faceted approach to pain relief. Aspirin and acetaminophen work to relieve pain, while caffeine helps to enhance the effectiveness of these two ingredients.
Varieties[edit | edit source]
There are several varieties of Excedrin available, each formulated to target specific types of pain:
- Excedrin Extra Strength: This is the original Excedrin product. It is intended for general pain relief.
- Excedrin Migraine: This product is specifically formulated to relieve the symptoms of migraines.
- Excedrin Tension Headache: This product is designed to relieve the symptoms of tension headaches.
- Excedrin PM Headache: This product combines pain relief with a sleep aid to help those suffering from headaches at night.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Like all medications, Excedrin can cause side effects. Common side effects include upset stomach, heartburn, and nervousness. More serious side effects can include allergic reactions, bleeding, and liver damage. It is important to follow the dosage instructions on the package to minimize the risk of side effects.
Precautions[edit | edit source]
Excedrin should not be used by individuals who are allergic to aspirin or other NSAIDs. It should also be used with caution by individuals with liver or kidney disease, stomach ulcers, or bleeding disorders. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before using Excedrin.
