Facebook Home
Facebook Home is a launcher application developed by Facebook, Inc. for the Android operating system. It was released on April 12, 2013, and aims to provide a more immersive and integrated Facebook experience on Android devices.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Facebook Home replaces the default home screen and lock screen of an Android device with a Facebook-centric interface. It allows users to view and interact with their Facebook News Feed, notifications, and messages directly from the home screen, without the need to open the Facebook app. The launcher also includes a feature called "Chat Heads," which enables users to have floating chat bubbles for their Facebook Messenger conversations, allowing for easy multitasking.
Features[edit | edit source]
Cover Feed[edit | edit source]
The main feature of Facebook Home is the Cover Feed, which displays a continuous stream of updates from the user's Facebook News Feed on the home screen. Users can swipe through the updates, like and comment on posts, and view photos and videos directly from the Cover Feed.
Chat Heads[edit | edit source]
Chat Heads is a unique feature of Facebook Home that allows users to have floating chat bubbles for their Facebook Messenger conversations. These chat bubbles appear on top of other apps and can be moved around the screen for convenient multitasking. Users can tap on a chat head to open the conversation and reply without leaving the current app.
App Launcher[edit | edit source]
Facebook Home includes an app launcher that provides quick access to the user's favorite apps. By swiping up from the bottom of the screen, users can access a list of their most-used apps and launch them directly.
Notifications[edit | edit source]
Notifications from Facebook, such as friend requests, messages, and event invites, are prominently displayed on the home screen. Users can easily view and respond to these notifications without opening the Facebook app.
Reception[edit | edit source]
Upon its release, Facebook Home received mixed reviews from users and critics. While some praised its innovative approach to integrating Facebook into the Android experience, others found it intrusive and overwhelming. The Cover Feed feature, in particular, drew criticism for prioritizing Facebook content over other apps and notifications.
Compatibility[edit | edit source]
Facebook Home is compatible with select Android devices running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above. It is available for download from the Google Play Store.
