Farzad Mostashari is an American physician and public health expert known for his work in health information technology and public health policy. Farzad Mostashari was born in Iran and immigrated to the United States at a young age. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, where he earned a degree in Biochemistry. He later attended the Yale School of Medicine, obtaining his MD degree. Mostashari also holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Mostashari began his career in public health at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in the city's response to the 2001 anthrax attacks and the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. He was instrumental in developing the city's electronic disease surveillance systems, which improved the ability to track and respond to public health threats.

National Coordinator for Health Information Technology[edit | edit source]

In 2011, Mostashari was appointed as the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In this role, he led efforts to promote the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) across the United States. His leadership was crucial in implementing the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act), which incentivized healthcare providers to adopt EHR systems.
