Fenbutrazate
Fenbutrazate is a pharmaceutical drug that was used as an appetite suppressant. It is a stimulant in the amphetamine family. Fenbutrazate was introduced in the 1960s by Janssen Pharmaceutica, a pharmaceutical company based in Belgium. It was sold under the brand name Pondinil.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Fenbutrazate acts as a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor, meaning it increases the levels of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain by inhibiting their reuptake into neurons. This leads to increased stimulation of the central nervous system, which can suppress appetite and increase alertness.
Medical Uses[edit | edit source]
Fenbutrazate was primarily used as an appetite suppressant in the treatment of obesity. It was also occasionally used off-label for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy due to its stimulant effects.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of fenbutrazate include insomnia, dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, and anxiety. More serious side effects can include psychosis, dependence, and cardiovascular disease.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
Fenbutrazate is currently a controlled substance in many countries due to its potential for abuse and dependence. It is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance in the United States under the Controlled Substances Act.
