Fertilization age

Fertilization age is a term used in embryology and obstetrics to describe the age of an embryo or fetus from the time of fertilization. It is also known as conceptional age or developmental age.

Definition

Fertilization age is calculated from the date of conception, which is approximately two weeks after the first day of the woman's last menstrual period. This is different from the gestational age, which is calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period.

Calculation

The calculation of fertilization age is based on the assumption that ovulation and fertilization occur approximately 14 days after the start of the menstrual cycle. However, this can vary between individuals and cycles. The fertilization age is therefore an estimate and not an exact measurement.

Clinical significance

Fertilization age is used in prenatal diagnosis and neonatology to assess the development and maturity of the fetus. It is also used in research to study the effects of environmental factors on fetal development.
