Fibro-cartilage

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Fibro-cartilage is a specialized type of cartilage that contains a mixture of fibrous tissue and cartilaginous tissue. It is characterized by a dense network of collagen fibers, which provide it with a high degree of tensile strength and elasticity. This type of cartilage is found in areas of the body that require a combination of strength and flexibility.

Structure[edit | edit source]

Fibro-cartilage is composed of chondrocytes (cartilage cells) that are embedded within a matrix of collagen fibers. The collagen fibers are primarily type I collagen, which is known for its strength, and type II collagen, which is more flexible. The matrix also contains proteoglycans, which help to retain water and provide the tissue with its compressive strength.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of fibro-cartilage is to provide support and absorb shock in areas of the body that are subject to high stress. It acts as a cushion between bones and helps to distribute loads evenly across joints. This type of cartilage is essential for maintaining the integrity and function of various joints and structures within the body.

Locations[edit | edit source]

Fibro-cartilage is found in several key locations within the body, including:

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Damage to fibro-cartilage can lead to significant pain and dysfunction. Conditions such as herniated discs, meniscal tears, and temporomandibular joint disorders are often associated with damage to fibro-cartilage. Treatment for these conditions may include physical therapy, medication, or surgical intervention.
