Figment
Figment is a character from the Epcot theme park at Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida. He is a small purple dragon who is the mascot of the Imagination! Pavilion in the park's Future World section. Figment was created by Walt Disney Imagineering and first appeared in the original Journey Into Imagination attraction, which opened on March 5, 1983.
History[edit | edit source]
Figment was conceived by Tony Baxter and Steve Kirk of Walt Disney Imagineering. The character was designed to embody the concept of imagination and creativity. Figment's name is derived from the phrase "a figment of the imagination," emphasizing his role as a product of creative thought.
Journey Into Imagination[edit | edit source]
The original Journey Into Imagination attraction featured Figment alongside Dreamfinder, a jovial inventor who guided guests through various realms of imagination. The ride was beloved for its whimsical design and catchy theme song, "One Little Spark," composed by the Sherman Brothers.
Journey Into YOUR Imagination[edit | edit source]
In 1999, the attraction was revamped and renamed Journey Into YOUR Imagination. This version of the ride removed Figment and Dreamfinder, focusing instead on a tour of the Imagination Institute, led by Dr. Nigel Channing, a character from the film Honey, I Shrunk the Audience!. The changes were met with significant criticism from fans.
Journey Into Imagination with Figment[edit | edit source]
Due to the negative reception of the 1999 version, the ride was reimagined again in 2002 as Journey Into Imagination with Figment. This iteration brought back Figment as the central character, though Dreamfinder did not return. The updated attraction aimed to restore the whimsical and imaginative spirit of the original ride.
Character Design[edit | edit source]
Figment is depicted as a small purple dragon with orange horns, wings, and a yellow chest. His playful and curious nature makes him a beloved character among Disney fans. Figment's design has remained relatively consistent since his debut, though his role and personality have evolved with the changes to the attraction.
Merchandise and Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]
Figment has become an iconic character within the Disney parks, inspiring a wide range of merchandise, including plush toys, clothing, and pins. He is also featured in various promotional materials and special events at Epcot, such as the Epcot International Festival of the Arts.
