Flag of Fiji
The flag of Fiji was adopted on 10 October 1970. The design of the flag is a Blue Ensign with the shield from the national coat of arms of Fiji. The flag has remained unchanged since Fiji became a republic in 1987, despite proposals to change it.
Design[edit | edit source]
The flag's field is a light blue, symbolizing the Pacific Ocean, which plays a significant role in the lives of the Fijian people. The Union Jack in the upper left corner reflects Fiji's historical links with the United Kingdom. The shield, which is derived from the national coat of arms, features a cross of Saint George and a lion holding a cocoa pod. The quarters of the shield contain a sugar cane, a coconut palm, a dove, and a bunch of bananas, representing the country's agricultural wealth.
History[edit | edit source]
The current flag was adopted when Fiji gained independence from the United Kingdom on 10 October 1970. Prior to independence, Fiji used a different flag, which was a British Blue Ensign defaced with the colony's badge. After becoming a republic in 1987, there were discussions about changing the flag, but the design has remained the same.
Symbolism[edit | edit source]
- The light blue field represents the Pacific Ocean.
- The Union Jack symbolizes Fiji's historical ties with the United Kingdom.
- The shield from the coat of arms includes:
* A cross of Saint George, representing the country's links to the United Kingdom. * A lion holding a cocoa pod, symbolizing strength and the agricultural industry. * Sugar cane, a coconut palm, a dove, and a bunch of bananas, representing the country's agricultural wealth and peace.
Proposals for Change[edit | edit source]
Since becoming a republic in 1987, there have been several proposals to change the flag to better reflect Fiji's independence and national identity. However, none of these proposals have been adopted, and the flag has remained unchanged.
