Niue

The flag of Niue was adopted on 15 October 1975. It consists of a yellow field with the Union Jack in the canton, which contains a blue disc with a golden star in the center and four smaller golden stars in the shape of a diamond.

Design[edit | edit source]

The flag's design reflects Niue's historical and political ties with the United Kingdom. The yellow field symbolizes the bright sunshine of Niue and the warm feelings of the Niuean people towards the United Kingdom and its people. The Union Jack in the canton signifies Niue's links with the United Kingdom. The blue disc with a large golden star in the center represents Niue itself, while the four smaller stars symbolize the Southern Cross constellation, indicating Niue's location in the South Pacific Ocean.

History[edit | edit source]

Niue, a small island nation in the South Pacific, has been in free association with New Zealand since 1974. Before the adoption of its own flag, Niue used the New Zealand flag. The current flag was designed to reflect Niue's unique identity and its relationship with both New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
