Flag of Tuvalu

The Flag of Tuvalu was adopted when the country became independent in 1978. The design of the flag is a light blue ensign with the Union Jack in the upper hoist-side quadrant. The flag also features a representation of the Tuvaluan archipelago using nine yellow stars, which are arranged to geographically represent the islands.

Design[edit | edit source]

The flag's design reflects Tuvalu's historical ties with the United Kingdom, as indicated by the presence of the Union Jack. The nine stars on the flag represent the nine islands that make up Tuvalu. The light blue field symbolizes the Pacific Ocean, which surrounds the islands.

History[edit | edit source]

Before gaining independence, Tuvalu was part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony. The flag used during this period was the same as the Flag of the United Kingdom. Upon separation from the Gilbert Islands and subsequent independence, Tuvalu adopted its own flag on 1 October 1978.

In 1995, the flag was briefly changed to a design that did not include the Union Jack. However, this change was met with public disapproval, and the original design was reinstated in 1997.
