Flag of the Isle of Man
The flag of the Isle of Man consists of a triskelion made up of three armoured legs with golden spurs, in the centre of a red field. The triskelion is an ancient symbol that has been associated with the Isle of Man for centuries.
Design[edit | edit source]
The flag features a red field with a triskelion in the centre. The triskelion is composed of three armoured legs, bent at the knee and conjoined at the thigh. Each leg is adorned with a golden spur. The design is both unique and historically significant, symbolizing the island's motto, "Quocunque Jeceris Stabit," which translates to "Whichever way you throw it, it will stand."
History[edit | edit source]
The triskelion has been a symbol of the Isle of Man since at least the 13th century. The current flag was adopted on 1 December 1932. Before this, the Isle of Man used various flags, including the Union Jack and the flag of the United Kingdom. The triskelion itself has been used in various forms, including on the coat of arms of the Isle of Man.
Symbolism[edit | edit source]
The triskelion is a symbol of resilience and independence. The three legs are said to represent the island's motto, indicating that no matter how the island is positioned, it will always stand firm. The red field is a traditional color in heraldry, often symbolizing bravery and strength.
Usage[edit | edit source]
The flag is used both on land and at sea. It is flown from government buildings, private homes, and during official ceremonies. The flag is also used by the Isle of Man Government and other official bodies.
Related Flags[edit | edit source]
The triskelion symbol is also found in the flag of Sicily, although the design and colors differ. The flag of Sicily features a triskelion with three naked legs and a gorgon's head in the center, set against a divided yellow and red field.
