Fluticasone Furoate/vilanterol

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Fluticasone Furoate/Vilanterol is a combination medication used in the management and prevention of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains two active ingredients: fluticasone furoate, a corticosteroid, and vilanterol, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA).

Composition[edit | edit source]

The medication is composed of two active ingredients: fluticasone furoate and vilanterol. Fluticasone furoate is a synthetic corticosteroid derived from fluticasone, designed to mimic the body's natural corticosteroids. Vilanterol is a LABA that works by relaxing and opening the airways to the lungs, making it easier to breathe.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Fluticasone furoate works by reducing inflammation in the lungs, while vilanterol relaxes the muscles in the walls of the small airways in the lungs. This helps to improve breathing and reduce symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Fluticasone Furoate/Vilanterol is indicated for the long-term, once-daily, maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema. It is also indicated for the once-daily maintenance treatment of asthma in patients aged 12 years and older.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Fluticasone Furoate/Vilanterol include headache, throat irritation, and upper respiratory tract infection. Serious side effects may include pneumonia in patients with COPD, adrenal insufficiency, decrease in bone mineral density, and paradoxical bronchospasm.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Fluticasone Furoate/Vilanterol is contraindicated in patients with severe hypersensitivity to milk proteins or any of the ingredients in the medication. It should not be used as a rescue therapy for the treatment of acute bronchospasm.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Fluticasone Furoate/Vilanterol may interact with other drugs including beta-blockers, diuretics, antivirals, and certain antidepressants. It is important to inform the healthcare provider of all medications being taken.
