Food & Wine
Food & Wine is a monthly magazine published by Meredith Corporation. It was founded in 1978 by Michael and Ariane Batterberry. It features recipes, cooking tips, travel information, restaurant reviews, chefs, wine pairings and seasonal/holiday content and has been credited by The New York Times with introducing the pairing of food and wine to the United States.
History[edit | edit source]
Michael and Ariane Batterberry founded Food & Wine as an insert in the New York magazine The Metropolitan Home. The Batterberrys had previously started the magazine Food Arts in the 1970s, which was a spin-off of their experiences with food and wine-focused travel guides. They intended Food & Wine to be more accessible, a magazine that covered "haute cuisine" but was written for "the home cook".
Content[edit | edit source]
Food & Wine publishes recipes, cooking tips, and wine reviews. They also publish a series of cookbooks and wine guides. There is a companion website which features additional recipes, a blog, and the ability for readers to submit their own food and wine experiences.
Wine Pairing[edit | edit source]
One of the major aspects of Food & Wine is their emphasis on wine pairing. The magazine believes that wine can enhance the enjoyment of food and seeks to educate its readers on this topic. The magazine provides detailed guides on pairing wine with different types of food, including cheeses, desserts, and various types of meats.
Chefs[edit | edit source]
Food & Wine has featured a number of well-known chefs on its cover including Thomas Keller, Mario Batali, and Bobby Flay. The magazine also includes profiles of up-and-coming chefs and highlights the culinary stars of the future.
Awards[edit | edit source]
Food & Wine is known for their awards, such as the Food & Wine Best New Chefs award, which recognizes up-and-coming chefs who have been in charge of a kitchen for five years or fewer. The winners are featured in the July issue of the magazine.
