Francesco St Jerome (also known as Francesco da Girolamo, Francesco Geronimo, or Francis Jerome, 1642–1716) was an Italian Jesuit priest and missionary. He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated for his evangelical zeal and miracles. He was canonized by Pope Gregory XVI in 1839. His feast day is observed on May 11.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Francesco St Jerome was born in Grottaglie, in the province of Taranto, Italy, on December 17, 1642. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) at the age of 16 and was ordained a priest in 1666.

Missionary Work[edit | edit source]

After his ordination, Francesco dedicated himself to missionary work in the Kingdom of Naples, particularly focusing on the rural and urban poor. He was known for his passionate sermons, tireless pastoral care, and commitment to the Sacrament of Confession. His work significantly contributed to the Catholic Reformation in Italy, combating the spread of Protestantism and reinvigorating the Catholic faith among the populace.

Miracles and Canonization[edit | edit source]

Throughout his life, Francesco St Jerome was attributed with performing numerous miracles, including healings and exorcisms. His deep devotion to the Virgin Mary and the Eucharist were central to his spiritual life and ministry. After his death on May 11, 1716, his cause for canonization was promoted, culminating in his canonization by Pope Gregory XVI.
