Franklin is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. It is a suburb of Milwaukee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,295. Franklin was incorporated in 1956 and has grown significantly since then.

Franklin was originally part of the Town of Kinnickinnic, which was established in 1838. The area was primarily agricultural until the mid-20th century. In 1956, Franklin was incorporated as a city to avoid annexation by the city of Milwaukee.

. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.6 square miles (89.6 km²), of which, 34.5 square miles (89.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it is water.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2020 census, there were 36,295 people, 13,500 households, and 9,800 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,051.3 people per square mile (405.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 85.6% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.6% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.1% of the population.

Franklin operates under a Mayor-Council government system. The mayor is elected at large, and the city council consists of six members elected from districts.

Education[edit | edit source]

Franklin is served by the Franklin Public School District. The district includes several elementary schools, a middle school, and Franklin High School.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Franklin has a diverse economy with a mix of manufacturing, retail, and service industries. Major employers include Northwestern Mutual and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare.

Parks and Recreation[edit | edit source]

Franklin has numerous parks and recreational facilities, including Whitnall Park, which is part of the Milwaukee County Park System. The city also has several golf courses, including Tuckaway Country Club.
