Franklin Benjamin Hough (July 20, 1822 – June 11, 1885) was an American physician, scientist, and historian. He is often referred to as the "father of American forestry" due to his pioneering work in the field of forestry and conservation.

Franklin B. Hough was born in Martinsburg, New York, on July 20, 1822. He attended local schools and later graduated from Union College in 1843. He went on to study medicine at the Cleveland Medical College, where he earned his medical degree in 1848.

Hough began his career as a physician, practicing medicine in his hometown of Martinsburg. He was also involved in various scientific pursuits, including meteorology and geology.

Forestry and Conservation[edit | edit source]

Hough's interest in forestry began in the 1850s when he observed the rapid deforestation occurring in the United States. He became an advocate for sustainable forestry practices and conservation. In 1873, he was appointed as the first chief of the United States Division of Forestry, a precursor to the United States Forest Service.

Hough conducted the first comprehensive survey of the nation's forests and published several influential reports on the state of American forests. His work laid the foundation for modern forestry practices and the establishment of national forest policies.

In addition to his contributions to forestry, Hough was a prolific historian. He wrote extensively on the history of New York State and the American Civil War. His historical works include "A History of Lewis County, New York" and "The Northern Invasion of October 1780."

Hough married Maria Eggleston in 1849, and they had several children. He was an active member of his community and participated in various scientific and historical societies.

Franklin B. Hough died on June 11, 1885, in Lowville, New York. He is remembered as a pioneer in the field of forestry and a dedicated historian. His work continues to influence forestry practices and conservation efforts in the United States.
