Franklin David Murphy (January 29, 1916 – June 16, 1994) was an American physician and university administrator. He served as the chancellor of the University of Kansas (KU) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Murphy was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended the University of Kansas, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He then went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Career[edit | edit source]

University of Kansas[edit | edit source]

Murphy began his career in academia at the University of Kansas, where he served as the dean of the School of Medicine. In 1951, he was appointed as the chancellor of the university. During his tenure, he was instrumental in expanding the university's academic programs and facilities.

University of California, Los Angeles[edit | edit source]

In 1960, Murphy became the chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles. Under his leadership, UCLA saw significant growth in its academic reputation and physical campus. He was a strong advocate for the arts and humanities, and he played a key role in the establishment of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After retiring from his administrative roles, Murphy continued to be active in various educational and cultural organizations. He passed away on June 16, 1994, in Los Angeles, California.

Murphy's contributions to higher education have left a lasting impact on both the University of Kansas and UCLA. His leadership and vision helped shape these institutions into prominent centers of learning and research.
