Frederick George Novy (December 9, 1864 – August 8, 1957) was an American bacteriologist and chemist who made significant contributions to the field of microbiology. He was a pioneering figure in the study of infectious diseases and played a crucial role in the development of bacteriology as a scientific discipline in the United States.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Frederick George Novy was born in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1886. Novy continued his studies at the same institution, obtaining a M.D. in 1891 and a Ph.D. in 1892. His doctoral research focused on the chemical properties of bacteria.

Novy joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 1891 as an instructor in bacteriology and later became a full professor. He was instrumental in establishing the university's first bacteriology laboratory. Novy's research interests included the study of pathogenic bacteria, antitoxins, and the development of vaccines.
