Gabriele Grunewald
Gabriele Grunewald (June 25, 1986 – June 11, 2019) was an American middle-distance runner who specialized in the 1500 meters. She was widely recognized not only for her athletic achievements but also for her courageous and public battle with cancer, which inspired many people both inside and outside the sports world. Grunewald's career was marked by her resilience and determination to compete at the highest levels of track and field, despite her ongoing health challenges.

Gabriele Grunewald was born in Perham, Minnesota. She discovered her passion for running at a young age and went on to compete in track and cross country at Perham High School. After graduating, Grunewald attended the University of Minnesota, where she competed in collegiate track and field. She showed significant improvement throughout her college career, which set the stage for her professional running career.
Professional Career[edit | edit source]
After college, Grunewald pursued a professional running career. She specialized in the 1500 meters, a middle-distance track event. Grunewald achieved considerable success on the track, qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials and competing in the World Championships. Her personal best in the 1500 meters was 4:01.48, making her one of the top American runners in the event during her career.
Battle with Cancer[edit | edit source]
Grunewald was first diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma, in 2009. Despite her diagnosis, she continued to train and compete at an elite level. Grunewald underwent multiple surgeries and treatments throughout her career but remained focused on her athletic goals. Her fight against cancer became a central part of her identity as an athlete and a public figure. Grunewald founded the nonprofit organization Brave Like Gabe to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, focusing on rare cancers.
