Gagarinite-(Ce)

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Gagarinite-(Ce) is a rare earth mineral that belongs to the group of minerals known as halides. Its chemical formula is identified as NaCeF4. Gagarinite-(Ce) is particularly notable for its content of cerium, one of the lanthanide series of elements, which are commonly referred to as rare earth elements. This mineral was named in honor of Yuri Gagarin, the first human to journey into outer space, reflecting the rarity and unique nature of the mineral itself.

Properties[edit | edit source]

Gagarinite-(Ce) crystallizes in the cubic system, exhibiting a crystalline structure that is typical for the fluoride minerals. The mineral is characterized by its bright yellow to greenish-yellow color and its translucent to transparent appearance. It has a hardness of 4-5 on the Mohs scale, which makes it relatively soft and susceptible to scratching. The specific gravity of gagarinite-(Ce) is approximately 4.3-4.6, which is considered high and indicative of its dense nature.

Occurrence[edit | edit source]

Gagarinite-(Ce) is found in a variety of geological environments, most commonly in alkaline igneous rocks, carbonatites, and associated pegmatites. These environments are known for their capability to concentrate rare earth elements, making them the primary sources of minerals like gagarinite-(Ce). Significant deposits of gagarinite-(Ce) have been discovered in several locations around the world, including the Kola Peninsula in Russia, which is one of the most notable sources of this mineral.

Applications[edit | edit source]

The primary interest in gagarinite-(Ce) and other cerium-rich minerals lies in their potential applications in various high-tech and industrial fields. Cerium and other rare earth elements are critical components in the manufacture of electronic devices, magnets, batteries, and various other technologies that are essential to modern life. While gagarinite-(Ce) itself is not directly used in these applications, the extraction of cerium and other rare earth elements from minerals like gagarinite-(Ce) is of significant importance.
