Galletti

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Galletti is a type of Maltese biscuit that is traditionally shaped like a Maltese cross. The biscuit is often consumed as a snack, and is particularly popular in Malta.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Galletti are not well-documented, but it is believed to have been introduced to Malta by the Knights of St. John, who ruled the island from 1530 to 1798. The biscuit's distinctive shape is said to represent the cross that the knights wore on their uniforms.

Preparation and Consumption[edit | edit source]

Galletti is made from a simple dough consisting of flour, water, salt, and sometimes yeast. The dough is rolled out and cut into the shape of a Maltese cross before being baked until crisp.

Galletti is often served with cheese, olive oil, or tomato paste, and can also be used as a base for canapés. In addition, it is a common accompaniment to wine and is frequently served at social gatherings and celebrations in Malta.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Galletti holds a significant place in Maltese culture. It is a staple in many Maltese households and is often served at traditional Maltese feasts and festivals. The biscuit's distinctive shape also makes it a symbol of national pride.
